Why Ramshaw Transport never says ‘no’ to a move (and why that’s so important for saving you money)
Ramshaw Transport is a removal company that offers home, commercial and international moves across a huge area in the north east of England from Northumberland, Newcastle and Durham all the way down to Harrogate and York.
Since starting in 2007 with just one man, Andrew Smith and one van the company has grown strongly every year since. Now, just over 9 years later, Ramshaw Transport has 24 vehicles, dozens of moving staff, 17,000 square feet of storage and it’s just opened a branch in Spain to help with international moves too.
How does Andrew explain this impressive growth?
In a word: Reliability. To Andrew, that means always being available when people call up asking for a move…
“I’ve never said ‘no’. Ever. If I can’t do your job myself for any reason I’ll find someone else for you that can,” Andrew says.
Why is that so important?
“Well, it’s price, basically. Our quotes at Ramshaw are never the cheapest, because the service we offer is top quality. But we always have availability. That’s important because I’ve seen it time and again where I’ll quote a customer and they choose to do their move with a company that’s given them a cheaper quote.
“But then it gets closer to the day of the move, and the customer suddenly gets a message from their removal company saying they can’t do the move anymore. Then the customer comes back to us. We can almost always do that move for them. But because it’s last minute, we end up charging more.
“Our customers end up moving on the date they want and they’re happy with the quality of the move. But they could end up paying £1,000 or £2,000 more than the original quote, because of the logistical challenges of doing that move at such short notice.”
Is this a common problem then – customers being let down by removal companies?
“I see it all the time and we get a lot of jobs that way, because we have capacity when other companies don’t. What customers don’t realise is that a lot of movers especially smaller ones will quote as low as they need to, to get the job. But if they get a more profitable job come through for the same date, most companies don’t have capacity for both. So the lower-value move gets dropped.
“This is common because the nature of the removal business is that everyone wants to move on the same dates. Weekends are usually popular. The last Friday of the month because exchanging contracts tends to happen at the end of the month, and that last Friday is when most people get paid. So you get a rush of jobs all at the same time.
