MOVING TO SPAIN
Top Tips For Moving To Spain
Moving to Spain for the year-long sunshine and idyllic way of life has been a dream come true for millions of Brits. So if you’ve decided it’s time to follow your dream and join them, then you need to be sure that right from the get go your removal plans run smoothly.

You will have spent a lot of time carefully considering your new Spanish home, including the culture, job market and the cost of living, but one of the first things you need to decide is what to take and what to leave behind, especially if you are moving to a smaller home.

Deciding What to Take

The best plan of action is to go through each room, one by one, with pen and paper in hand.

There may be some things that you cannot take with you that you can sell, some that you can give to charity, and others that you can simply throw away! You may have things of sentimental value that you would dearly love to take, but are unsure as to how much you can take in your removals package. Your children may insist on taking all their bedroom furniture and toys, bikes etc., and it will be hard to say no!

Once you’ve narrowed down the list, you can contact a removals company for a quote and ensure that you’ve budgeted enough for transporting your belongings.

Electrical Appliances

Electronic goods are extremely expensive in Spain, but fortunately all you need is a converter for your British ones, and away you go! As the Spanish electrical supply works on 230v 50hz it means that appliances from the UK will not work without a transformer, so be sure to pack as many as you need.

Transporting Your Belongings

Transporting all your furniture, electronic goods and personal possessions safely and securely can seem like a colossal task, particularly as it is not just from one region in the UK to another.

Planning the move can be both concerning and extremely time consuming, which is why it’s always advisable to find a well-established, reputable and experienced removals company to make the job as hassle-free as possible. They will be able to advise you on the cost of transport and the benefits, as well as the disadvantages of both shipping and air freight. Make sure you choose a company that will ensure your belongings will be collected from the dock or airport quickly and transferred to your new home safely.

Removals and Packing

The first stage of planning your removals is arranging for a professional to visit your home. When he or she comes, they will look at all the belongings that you would like to take, taking clear notes of the measurements and approximate weight. They will be able to advise you of the benefits of a professional packing service, and will discuss the best way to pack and transport any items that need special handling.

Cartons, boxes, bubble wrap, bags for furniture and covers for upholstery should all be provided by your chosen company to keep everything in safe in transit so it arrives in pristine condition. They will plan the best route for you and your family, as well as the most cost effective transport for your belongings to ensure a stress free service.

Arranging Healthcare

Although healthcare isn’t necessarily something you would consider during the packing and planning stage, it is strongly advised that you arrange it well in advance of travelling, as you will need to be covered from the moment you touchdown.

The DWP can send you an E106 or E121, depending on your age. This will ensure that you will receive reciprocal healthcare to the UK for a limited period of two years, subject to your national insurance payments, and changing regulations within Spain.

Also, if you do not already have a Spanish bank account, ask at your UK bank to see if they have any affiliate banks in the area you are going to, that way transactions between the two countries will be much easier and cheaper.
