In a bid to curb vehicle emissions and tackle dirty air, the government has proposed that some drivers of older cars could be paid if they change to electric cars. This draft plan includes retrofitting trucks, buses and black cabs in a bid to deliver cleaner air. Dozens of cities and towns could also have clean zones set up within them
The plans have been welcomed by the motor industry but environmental campaigners have described the plans as ‘half-baked’
The proposal has finally been published after a protracted legal battle with some green groups. There is a variety of different options in the proposal released last week. Of all the measures considered the most radical is a ‘targetted’ car scrapping scheme. Documents supporting this plan estimates that up to 15,000 diesel and older petrol cars being taken off the road.
The document states that "Under this scheme, 15,000 Euro 1-5 diesel cars/Euro 1-3 petrol cars are replaced with electric cars. The grant level that has been assumed for this option is £8,000."
These proposal have been met positively by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and it is said that a scheme could be brought in within two years.
